MACHINE SHOP PRACTICES & TECHNIQUES – METAL LATHE TURNING

Course Duration: 5 days

Overview of “some” Subject Area and their corresponding Learning Objectives:

Subject Area : Lathe Operation

Overview : Before using any machine, you must be able to use the controls properly. This unit will familiarize the Trainee(s)  with the controls of the lathe and prepare them for lathe operation

Learning Objectives : This Learning Plan addresses the following learning objectives to help the Trainee(s) master the competency:
•    Explain drives and shifting procedures for changing speeds on the lathe.
•    Describe the use of various feed control levers.

Subject Area : Lathe Operations Between Centers
Overview: Many lathe jobs require the use of centers. Turning between centers can help keep the diameters of the part concentric. In this unit the trainee(s) will learn how to correctly set up and perform cutting operations between centers

Learning Objectives : This Learning Plan addresses the following learning objectives to help the Trainee(s) master the competency:
•    Describe and perform the correct setup for turning between centers.
•    Detail the steps necessary for turning to size predictably.
•    Turn a series of parts between centers to specified sizes.
•    Explain and correctly perform recessing or grooving on a lathe.
•    Correctly calculate, set up, and cut chamfers on the lathe using the compound rest.

Subject Area : Lathe Threading
Overview : Many lathe jobs require threads. This unit will cover the correct methods for cutting various types of threads on a lathe.

Learning Objectives : This Learning Plan addresses the following learning objectives to help the Trainee(s) master the competency:
•    Describe the different thread forms, noting their similarities and differences.
•    Calculate thread depths, in feeds, and minor diameters of threads.
•    Correctly use different methods of thread measuring techniques and devices.
•    Correctly set up a lathe to cut threads.
•    Identify the components of the lathe used for threading.
•    Calculate the proper RPM for threading on the lathe.
•    Detail the steps and procedures necessary to cut a Unified thread to the correct depth.
•    Setup a lathe for threading and cut several internal and external Unified threads.
