NO SMOKING, STRICTLY PROHIBITED ON COAL CARRIERS
Coal is a highly flammable material and can cause fire onboard when not properly checked
Chartered found crew smoking on deck on coal carrier while the ship is discharging coal in Japan and complained to ship owners. This is a very dangerous situation. Many ships were already lost in fire in port or at sea because of disregards to smoking regulations.
At present in all types of vessels, there are rules and regulations on NO SMOKING itemized in the ISM/SMS and posters all over the ship to remind people; crew and visitors onboard to be observed and followed for safety onboard ship.
Non-observance of this rules and regulations is a strong violation and disregard to safety. All crew are assigned onboard, because you are the qualified and trained seafarer.
Hence the ship-owners reiterates their instructions to observe and follow the rules and regulations on the PREVENTION OF FIRE onboard particularly NO SMOKING REGULATIONS. The ship has an assigned Smoking area or Smoking Room, so all crew onboard are to smoke only in smoking room and not on any other areas onboard.
